Your proposed modifications all sound good just be sure to make your levels unique and stand out from each other to count for points in the final submission.
I just played your game, congratulations! I really like the design, the way the camera moves. I found the camera system a bit "violent" at first, but after a few minutes of play, you get used to it, maybe see to add a sensitivity setting? Otherwise as you said, you should increase the difficulty with other types of enemies, bosses, etc.. otherwise, great game!
